MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MEETING ON 2nd February

It was nice to see so many of you coming back for more punishment, and I hope none of you get my cold!

By far the major part of the session was taken up with talking about keyboards, and the many shortcuts and other facilities available to you when you know.

What is worth repeating here is how to get a non keyboard character using the ALT key and the number keypad.  Have your printed list of ASCII codes handy, as it's no use my putting that on this page as the characters wouldn't display correctly unless your browser was configured to display IBM character set number 2, and I don't think Internet Explorer can.

What you do is :

(1) Make sure the Num Lock key is ON

(2) Holding down the left hand ALT key, tap out the number of the character you want on the number pad (it doesn't work using the numbers on the top row of the main keyboard), including a leading zero for numbers under 100 (i.e. 065 for a capital A)

(3) Release the ALT key.  The character should now appear on the screen.

The other tip not included elsewhere is how to get an accented character on a SPANISH keyboard (it doesn't work on a UK or US one).

Simply tap the accent followed by the letter.  To get this - i - I tapped 4 followed by e. To get the accent on its own, tap it twice.

Keyboard shortcuts were the other major item of interest.  I have put together a list of Windows keyboard shortcuts, and specific lists  for Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and text editors (WordPad and NotePad).

You can download this list from Here   The document is in Rich Text format, which means that although it's formatted text, it's readable with almost any word processing program, including one you've all got, WordPad.

If you'd prefer an unformatted plain text version this is   Here

Some of you were saying you had trouble accessing this site through the redirection URL, http://billnot.com

You can always get the "Perplexed" home page through its true URL (address) of

On the 16th February, I'll be making use of Moira Stephen's book for the first time.  If you have a few spare minutes, you may feel like reading pages 25 to 32.  Pages 1 to 25 are more or less equivalent to what we've already covered.

Finally, a reminder of my e-mail addresses:

questions@billnot.com for questions to be answered in the Grapevine or at a session.
