Matters arising from the meeting on 12th October 2002

Nineteen of you - a very pleasing number.  Thanks for coming.  The first thing we discussed was the unreliability of Internet connections through Wanadoo and Terra.  It's an unfortunate fact of life that both these ISPs have more customers than they can, at peak times, cope with.  If you fail to get through between (about) 1800 to 2400 then the fault is almost certainly not yours.  If you can't get through at a quiet time, for example Sunday morning, then there may be a fault with your equipment that you need to check out.

The main topic of the day was the keyboard and, in particular, the Alt-NumPad trick to get a character by means of its ASCII code.  I should have added that this will work with most applications, but not all.  We also brushed on the very important matter of the difference between plain text, and graphics which happen to be readable - as one of you very succinctly put it, a photograph.  Finally, I encouraged you to start using the class e-mail discussion group.  Why not have a go at posting something?
Hasta la semana que viene.
