MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MEETING ON 8th December
Future Sessions
After Christmas, sessions will continue, but I do not propose to repeat the current course for the third time. I am looking to you, the audience, for suggestions as to what YOU would like to see discussed in these sessions. Please e-mail me you ideas, to questions@billnot.com
The meeting on 22nd December will be to discuss possible subjects for discussion.
There are a lot of URLs (web addresses) to be posted in these "Matters Arising", and I'll group them all together at the bottom.
Saturday's Meeting
We spent the first half of the meeting discussing viruses. There have been a couple of very widespread and nasty ones around at present. I repeated my previous advice:
Don't open any attachment, whether it's from somebody you know or not, without checking it first.
It's not enough simply to install an anti-virus checker - you have to update it frequently, too.
For extra security, use a mail attachment quarantine program in addition to your anti-virus software.
If possible (it isn't in OE), don't open any mail in HTML - only use plain text.
After tea, we at last got around to discussing newsgroups, using the Free Agent program, and looking at both text and binary newsgroups. I know a few of you were disappointed at how little time we had - maybe this should be a topic for a future session.
DECEMBER 22nd
The meeting on 22nd December is very important, as it is when we will discuss what we are to do after Christmas. I would be particularly happy to see new people there, so please tell and invite all your friends.
